The Norfolk State University athletics community is mourning the loss of former Spartan women’s basketball player Amber Brown, who passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20 at the age of 28.
“It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the untimely passing of Amber Brown.” NSU women’s basketball head coach Larry Vickers said. “Her dedication, resilience, and vibrant spirit left an indelible mark on our Spartan family. Our thoughts and condolences are with her family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time.”
An Atlanta, Ga. native, Brown played on the women’s basketball team at Norfolk State (2013-16) for three seasons. She was a member of the MEAC Commissioners All-Academic Team her sophomore year and the NSU Athletics Director’s Honor Roll her freshman year.
Brown inspired the Norfolk State community with her courageous battle off the court in 2016, spending over a month in the hospital after complications from a serious health condition. She returned to Echols Hall to a standing ovation prior to a game against Morgan State that same year.
An acknowledgement of her inspirational fight, Brown received the N4A Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award on June 10, 2017.
Brown recorded 145 points, 216 rebounds, and 38 assists throughout her three-year career with the Spartans. She played in a total of 60 games, starting in 31 contests.
